Late Roman Artillery - Antek - 12-19-2006
I wonder how you would estimate the value of the tossing machines of Late Roman Empire. Maybe there is on this forum such a topic, if so give me some hints where I can find it, please. Some people with whoam I spoke to claimed that the artillery was an archaism, an unnecessary toy. But still the fact is that, for example Vegetius advises that in a legion there should be 10 onagers and 55 ballist ( well ofcourse the truth is that Vegetius makes a mistake putting a pressure mainly on infantry) However as far as I know the carrobelistae troops where in use till the 6th century. So, what is the situation? Was it a necessary burden for the 3-5th century army?

Given the times we come across field artillery (which is I think what you are referring to, not artillery in general) in sources ranging from Vegetius, or De Rebus Bellicis to Maurice's Strategikon, I think we have reason enough to assume that the Late Roman artillery corps was a highly specialised and useful tool for commanders on the battlefield.

Torsion artillery wasn't and outdated toy during the Late Empire. We only need to read the battle accounts by Ammianus (second half of fourth century) to Procopius (first half of sixth century), naming only the best know sources, to become aware of its widespred use and effectivity.
Components of late fourth century ballistae were recovered at the Danubian limes forts of Orsova and Gornea (Romania), while another one was forming part of a fourth century stockade at Sala (Morocco)
If you make more concrete questions, I'll try to give you more concret answers :wink:

Well perhaps you could tell me what was the number of slingers and archers in Roman auxillia (if you can call them like this) of late antiquiti. And what does late onager look like? Was it rather silmular to thoes we know from erlier period or to medieval catapult? And after all is it truth that first annalist who mantions the name "onager" was Ammianus? And The last question. How did Carrobalist work? Was it carried by horeses (if I remember well Trajn column showes that), or mules? Was it able to fire durning the ride, and how huge was ballista instaled on it? Well it's quite interesting, since I have registerd on you forum I only ask questions... will have to work to change that

Thanks for info, but there are few problems with "Strategikon". From what I know it wasn't translated to Polish (but its not a big deal, there are surly a lot of English editions), and second - it's a rather source for early medieval than late antiquity.

I understand about 70%-80% of the text, but after a long time of fighting with cyrylica. It's rather a torment than plaisure. But also good impulse to start my adventure with learning Russian once again
