Gaius Julius Caesar\'s final resting place! - Gaius Julius Caesar - 12-09-2006

It has suddenly occur ed to me that, despite my fascination with the man and his exploits, I have no idea where his tomb is! Confusedhock:

I suppose I would look it up eventually, but since I am here, thought I might as well ask the question!

Does anyone have info on this, I have seen/heard of people still leaving flowers in the temple of Castor/Pollux for him on the Ides, but cannot recall ever reading anything else on the subject!

Your help or info will be greatly appreciated on this matter!

Sincerely

Its in the "temple of the divine Julius" Right smack dab in the middle of the forum.

I know I have a picture around here somewhere. I'll see if I can't find it.

Idea Idea Idea    OK, my wonderful memory has fool(ed){made one of}me again! thanks for the nudge! I will appreciate a picture of it, as the one i remember shows the whole forum, then mentions the three pillars of Castor/Pollux, but the are two sets of three pillars in the photo, one large one smaller! :? ? x x roll:

One day I WILL get there!

The story about Caesar's funeral is here. He had to be cremated on the Field of Mars, but the crowd went out of control and burned him on the Forum on an improvised pyre. The ashes were, as far as I know, never recovered.

The little round structure in the ruin of the Temple of Divus Julius was probably the place where the dictator's body was exposed.

Thanks Jona, I did start reading the twelve lives a few years ago, but got side tracked by other things and never got back to it!

It was forbidden to bury the dead within the pomerium, so it's unlikely that Caesar was actually buried in the forum. Tombs were always outside the Servian wall.

Unless you're Trajan, of course (who was well and truly shafted).*

*J.R. Patterson ('Living and dying in the City of Rome: houses and tombs' in J. Coulston and H. Dodge Ancient Rome: the Archaeology of the Eternal City, Oxbow 2000, 259-89) also mentions Domitian (ibid. 265), buried in the temple of the Gens Flavia. Caesar's right to be buried within the pomerium was granted by the senate (loc. cit.).

Caesar\'s funeral mask - Uwe Bahr - 12-11-2006

Avete omnes,

I found this so called funeral mask of Caesar some time ago in the wolrd wide web. Does anybody know if it is really a depiction of Julius? I never heard about it before.

While visiting Rome I read in some tourist brochure that the ashes of Caesar were placed inside a round metal container and placed by Augustus on top of one of the Obelisks he brought from Egypt. Not sure if there is any truth in it.

It was a custom of leading families to have an area of the family home which was set aside for the display of the ancesteral funeral masks!
This was common all through the Republican period. 8) I imagine it carried on but I don't know.

That is certainly a battle hardened face anyway!! perhaps the ironic grimace of a man who saw the irony of his own death!

Yes,

I think so too, in the meantime I found this sculpture on Jona's website, that is very obviously made after Caesar's death mask I showed above (scroll down to the bottom of this site:

Actually, his facial expression might be a result opf his epileptic fits... he might even have had a slight paralysation in the facial muscles....
