I spent some time navigating but did not find much. Perfect. You saved me the effort of scanning my aunts book. I am pleased everyone will have chance to look at these magnificent mosaics and put Santa Maria Maggiore on the list of places to see in Rome. Enjoy and hope to hear interesting comments regards 5th century dress and militaria (of course artistic conventions abound but don't they always?) Re: Roman & Other Mosaics - Tarbicus - 12-02-2006 Is that a segmentata at the bottom left being worn? Mary Harrsch's (Univ. of Oregon, USA) collection of Roman (and other ancient) mosaic images: http://flickr.com/photos/44124324682@N01/tags/mosaic/ Most images are medium sized. Although some larger, more detailed images are available elsewhere, this is the best overall collection of Ancient Roman mosaics that I've found so far in one place. Her university website http://www.uoregon.edu/~mharrsch/ is also very interesting. Re: Roman & Other Mosaics - M. Demetrius - 10-25-2008 Quote:Is that a segmentata at the bottom left being wornIt looks like it in the mosaic, but seg that came that low would be impractical. You couldn't bend sufficiently, or sit at all. Notice how the belly contour is, too. The shape of hamata, but the lines of seg. Hard to know. Hmm. Is that a yellow ochre tunic?? Could it be just an artist`s interpretation of some kind of lamellar armour? |
