Well...I COULD....but I don't think the mate will like that too much, especially since he'll be short a crew member. You can definitely put me down for Nashville in '08 though.

Don't come to watch, Marshal, make a chiton and a sling or a couple of javelins and take part with the light-armed troops. In fact, in the time you've got, you could make a linothorax and a shield for yourself.

Update:-
We will now be gathering in SHEFFIELD, England on the 24th-27th of August, this year. The first two days will be for us to chat, drill, fight, swap notes, etc. and the last two will be public displays. It is a multi-period event, so there will be lots of other stuff to see. Many of you have already said you can make this; those of you who weren't aware of the change, please let me know whether you can.

Actually, Paul, thats a grand idea. I could almost certainly pull a light-troop thing together. But about javelins . . . I'd love to get myself some practical javelin training, because learning to use all kinds of weapons is something that interests me. Anybody know of some resources on Greek light infantry arms?

Right, chaps!
The 2007 event approaches and I would like to let you know what the "Rules of Engagement" are, so to speak.
Most of you pride yourselves on the authenticity of your kit, and the pictures I have seen appear to reflect this, so you should find that it already conforms to these standards, if not to higher ones. If it doesn't, please see this as an opportunity to "raise your game"!
Clothing must be of authentic materials; wool, linen or silk. Cotton may well have been available in Egypt at this time, but we can't prove its everyday use in Greece. This rule includes trim. You can get some lovely posh edging for your chitones with patterns in silver and gold, but it's nearly all man-made and looks it. Please do not use it.
Shields can be wooden or metal but not fibre-glass, please, unless you're prepared to disguise both the interior and exterior of the shield with leather or paint ( and paint can only be deemed a sufficient disguise for the outside). I've seen metal shields which have been given some kind of "bronze" coating and it doesn't look right. If you have a metal shield, please paint it with the sort of shield designs we've been discussing on RAT. I'm trying to be generous about shields because they are so hard to get hold of, but please don't bring anything that doesn't look right. I will be the final judge of this; don't make me a Rhipsaspidos!
Armour can be metal, linen or canvas (so long as it looks right) but not leather or fibre glass.
Footwear must have leather soles. Bare feet are acceptable, even for wealthy warriors, so if you can't get authentic sandals, boots or whatever, wear nothing ( on your feet!).
Leather should be vegetable-tanned (or smoke-tanned, if you have access to such material) unless you intend to paint it all over.
Please do not bring "fantasy" Greek swords.
Buckles, whether on armour, sandals or anything else should at least be brass, preferably bronze and should not have rollers. Usually, only modern steel buckles have these, anyway.
I am advised that no finds of iron Corinthian helmets are extant, therefore use none - unless you're prepared to paint the whole thing, inside and out.
If any of this causes anyone problems, please PM me. I'm not likely to change my mind, but I may be able to help you, in some way.
Some kit will be available for borrowing, but we need to know who needs what, in advance.

Nashville sounds possibly do-able if the dates are right.Anyway,I'll do my part to support it by contacting the powers that be.If the gods favor it, it may be a reality.

Gioi, I allowed almost anything in the first year because I didn't want to quench anyone's enthusiasm, but I made it clear that I was doing so and that I would expect people to be inspired to improve anything that was not of a high standard. I know you've since written that you were joking, but I want to make it clear that, on the one hand, I want to see the high standards that are now so much the norm in re-enactment and, on the other hand, I'm prepared to work with people to overcome specific problem areas ( as opposed to saying "One item of your kit is below standard. Go away!")
Nashville is hardly likely to welcome us if we don't set ourselves high standards.
Arthes, I'm not aware of any necessity for you to route your trip via Sussex... Thanks for the "Alexander Revisited" clip, I enjoyed it very much.

Please note we are working towards a show in Nashville, at the Parthenon,
next year, so plan ahead for that and contact the authorities at the
Parthenon to register your interest. This is being pursued by Phil Reaney,
who lives in Texas.
I am also planning, for 2009, a return to Watford, London, for what will
hopefully be the 4th International Festival so, again, if you're interested,
you can start long-term planning. It's about time I met some of you and we did some combat!

To update everyone on the International dimension of Ancient Greek re-enactment, we are currently doing the following:-
Trying to persuade the authorities in Nashville, Tennessee, to let us stage a Festival there, in 2008, or later.
Negotiating with a Greek festival in Atlanta, Georgia, to provide Hoplites for them in October, 2008, with a view to doing this and Nashville on consecutive weekends.
Considering a meeting at Thermopylae on the 4th of August, 2008.
Preparing for a second Festival in Watford (the Athens of Hertfordshire) in 2009.
Clearly, we could be massively over-stretched in 2008, especially those of us who do other periods, but I think we have to keep all the irons in the fire until we know which one is going to work. Currently, Nashville is not looking promising. I recognise that most of us might have to make a hard decision between Georgia and Thermopylae, but I believe that thereare bound to be some people who could only do Georgia and others who could only do Thermopylae and I'd like to give both groups the chance.
