Subarmalis question (again) - Martin Wallgren - 08-12-2006

When you guys have made your subarmails (you who use it) have you had any lacing or fastening straps or simillar?

Do you have it slit in anyway?

I am in the finishingstate of mine and I wanted it to be quite snug fitting. I have it laced up in the m,iddle down to my solar plexus and slit in the left side an laced there to.

to my knowlage there is no surviving examles of subarmalis. Do you guys have any ideas or tink I have done it in a possible way?

I can add fotos when a come home tomorrow!

Martin

I'm surprised no one has answered this.

The simple answer is nobody knows.

The more complicated answer is probably.

It's clear that the musculata at least fits over a very tight-fitting subarmalis. That presumes that there is some way to tighten it. That can be laces or it could just be overlap with long ties that can expand.

For examples, check out the padded armor thread.

Can't find the link off hand in the search however.

Quote:It's clear that the musculata at least fits over a very tight-fitting subarmalis. That presumes that there is some way to tighten it.

Or it could simply be a fitted garment- presuming a way to tighten it presumes it's not necessarily made for the individual wearer, yes?

And I'm curious- just why do you think the subarmalis under a musculata has to be tight-fitting? Is it because depictions show it to be close-fitting armor? If so, couldn't that simply mean the subarmalis is not particularly thick and is flexible? I would certainly think because it is shaped armor that anything underneath would be best fitted as opposed to a draping form of garment. I would also think that this would be rather simpler than adding all kinds of lacing.
