RIB Inscription - Religion on Hadrian\'s Wall - Mithras - 08-07-2006

Hi,

I have heard that there is an inscription from Hadrians Wall (Chesters Fort) numbered RIB 1486, concerning pagan sacrifice during the Christian period. Does anyone have the translation? I do not have any of the RIB in translation or otherwise.

I'd love to verify this, though, it sounds fascinating...

And I can't find it here: http://www.athenapub.com/RIB1.htm Sad

Maybe the wrong reference?
RIB 1486 is thought to be a garbled quarry inscription (now lost). Nobody (to my knowledge) has ventured a translation.

Duncan, have I misquoted? Is the RIB number actually 01486 as Jasper has provided, and not 1486? From your comment it sounds like they're two different inscriptions.

Many thanks for your input on this!

No -- it's the same inscription, okay. It just doesn't seem to have anything to do with pagan sacrifice. (Or anything else, come to that!)

I stumbled upon RIB 1486 on www.roman-britain.org here: http://www.roman-britain.org/places/cilurnum.htm

Of course I need to verify it!

The translation given there is: "THE CENTURY OF SENEC[A?...] BURNED OFFERING EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT LAWFUL"

Which sounds like a fantastic inscription to me!

Hi Paul,
The 0 in front of 1486 comes from the online database I took it from.
Someone needs to grab the actual RIB volume and look up the commentary, methinks.

A most inventive interpretation!

With those words of wisdom I will stay well away! I could really have used that inscription as translated, though, it would have been pretty cool ... Smile
