H.J.P. Arnold - mcbishop - 07-14-2006

John Smith (of Hod Hill fame) alerted me to the fact that H.J.P. "Douglas" Arnold died recently and I'm surprised it has not already been mentioned here, given his role in the establishment of legio II Augusta in the UK (although he largely features on the web for his astronomical work).

Ave atque vale, Douglas.

Douglas Arnold - claudia crisis - 07-24-2006

It was with great sadness that we heard of the parting of Douglas Arnold, senior member of Leg II Avg.

We were members of the Leg II Avg for several years, before my recent ill health, when we used to participate in re-enactment, and I recall a lasting memory of Douglas from filming in Snowdonia several years ago for the Lost Legions of Varus, where Douglas taking the leading role was required to ride a horse for the first time in his life. These were local horses, inexperienced of riders in Roman armour, which had already thrown and injured several seasoned cavalry members. Douglas, was equal to the challenge, courageously clinging on despite obvious and understandable trepidation.

I also recall he once told me that he and his wife Audrey, from whom he was obviously inseparable, had been together since the age of 11.
We send her our deepest condolences.

Hilary and Robert Travis

From the Sol Invictus site:

A true Roman to the core!!

Douglas helped, supported and guided Legio Secunda Augusta Roman
Living History Society for many years, first as a Centurion then
as a Senior Officer and always as a personal friend. Group members
who knew him would also like to send their condolences.

David, Carol, Molly, Glenn, Robin (Richardson) and members of Leg II Avg

The first contact I had with Douglas, was when he had his Centurian kit stolen from his car. He then commisioned me to make his armour, from then a wonderfull friendship began and I not only created his centurian kit but also did his commanders outfit. What I did discover about Doug was, that apart from his eyes always being in heavens I found him to be the most down to earth man one could ever meet.
