You may find the answer Here :?

Re: sling power/catapult power - Felix - 06-28-2006

Xenophon's force was Greek, so the slingers were recruited among the men from Rhodes; and they specialized in the use of lead bullets.

"we must get slingers as soon as possible and cavalry. I am told there are in the army some Rhodians, most of whom, they say, know how to sling, and their missile will reach even twice as far as the Persian slings (which, on account of their being loaded with stones as big as one's fist, have a comparatively short range; but the Rhodians are skilled in the use of leaden bullets[2]). Re: sling power/catapult power - D B Campbell - 06-28-2006

conon394\\n[quote]Hmm I hate to take pot shots at Diodorus (he gets enough abuse) but the nearly identical phrase in your citation and D B Campbell’s make me think of for want of a better word a “Diodorus-ismâ€

Re: sling power/catapult power - hoplite14gr - 06-28-2006

Hmm I think that Diodorus exagerates or uses the phrase metaforicaly.
Still though he gave a chance to learn a few things.

Kind regards

Quote: Here is an interesting group of Roman lead slingshot, all are the usual egg shape, some showing signs of being used. These items were in use from Republican times right through to the end of the Roman empire, but generally lead slingshot went out of fashion during the 2nd century AD.

Is this true? Was a spread of the bow weapon responsible?

Great pic.
That one large sling bullet would be a monster to sling! Do you remember it's weight..?
Johnny

Re: sling power/catapult power - hoplite14gr - 07-02-2006

This bullet would possibly be thrown by staff sling.
No sorry didn ask the weight.

Enjoy some more.

it reads EISPRATOY = receive this (meant as something owed and returned!)

it reads "present for you!"

This is quite funny, make me remember the same think americans do in their missiles!

So its a millenia tradition! Smile

Stefanos,
Great pics..! The Greeks had/have a great sense of humour..!
Keep your eye open for images of slingers. I'm very interested in Greek slingers....
Thanks
Johnny

Diodorus of Sicily
Book V. 18. 2-19. I

"...and with such force that the missile seems to have been shot, as it were, from a catapult;..."

katapeltou ...is this Greek for catapult?

Johnny

I would doubt very much that Diodorus was being scientific, or stating that the velocities or power were even similar in any way, but was being a writer and trying to convey to the reader the devastating power of the slingers. Literary license.

As I posted earlier Ithink that your post is the answer Jim.
Kind regards

Re: sling power/catapult power - Matt Lukes - 07-02-2006

Indeed- this similie simply can't be taken literally unless Diodorus actually conducted scientific experiments to prove it. It really does smack of hyperbole to illustrate just how powerful a sling could be. All you need do is see his qualifier 'seems' to see that he can't be speaking about literal truth...

And sure a sling bullet can have as much kinetic energy as a 1kg ball Magnus- KE is dependent on mass and VELOCITY, yes? Big Grin A 250g sling bullet moving 4x faster than a 1kg ball will have exactly the same KE and be rather more devestating as it'd apply that energy over a smaller area

Hello,

anyone having by chance the following article at home as pdf?
