Pugio stolen at Tarraco Viva - Praefectusclassis - 06-12-2006

Hi!
I've just received a message from the secretary of the Roemercohorte Opladen. During the event one of their pugiones was stolen. Details of the theft & a photo of the item can be seen here: http://www.roemercohorte.de/englisch/start.htm

I hope this can be solved!

Stolen Pugio - Celer - 06-12-2006

Salve,

That is Erik Konig's work - the very best, and it will be very difficult for the thief to shift it. Having had my helmet destroyed by similar sorts of people, my heart bleeds for the owner. RAT members keep your eyes and ears peeled, especially on ebay. We might just get the culprit.

Good hunting,

Celer.

How would you list Roman dagger in spanish on Ebay? What is "Roman dagger" in spanish?

The reason I ask is because I often have a browse through Ebay, and I could always take a quick visit to other Ebay sites and do a quick search on the words.

roman dagger= daga romana or puñal romano.

I'm very sad about that. It's curios the fact, that only the pugio was stolen. The thief probably could be a reenactment fan, who wants to "get a souvenir". Probably he/she do'nt know one pugio of that kind is priced about 3000 eur.

Some dumb asshole could even list it as a gladius or 'espada corta romana' (Roman short sword) :?
If the thief only stole that, maybe he/she did know more or less what he/she was stealing Sad
I shiver only thinking of such loss for the owner!

pugio stolen - Graham Sumner - 06-13-2006

Hi

Even to the non specialist that would look a very attractive item. The note says the belt was taken as well, which would imply they were both stolen together from the changing area or if it was left unattended at the camp site, I am sure it could not be taken while the reenactor was wearing it.

However I must say as an ex Guard member I was struck by the fact that when I arrived at the football field early before the display the campsite was not manned by anyone from either the German or Spanish Groups and other members of the public were already crossing the rope barrier and going inside the tents. It was always Guard policy to have someone on site in or out of kit to keep an eye on things as soon as it was open to the public.

One hopes the item is not used in any other crime as that is the sort of thing which makes bad publicity for our hobby which is continually under threat from over zealous politicians.

Graham.

I think the pugio was stolen INSIDE one of the roman leather tents.
I agree with you in the lack of vigilance, both the groups and the organization.

Salvete!

Finally I managed to reactivate my account on RAT so I can give some more information about the theft as far as I am the secretary, who contacted Jasper by mail. Wink

As you supposed, the dagger was stolen from inside a tent. To be precise, from inside a closed box. Some other items were missing to, we just didn't list them.

We don't think that the things were stolen by someone who didn't know what he was taking. That's why we informed the communtiy, because your great help my be the only little chance to see these things back again.
