Painted military tombstones [reconstruction] - ARRIVS - 06-01-2006

Avete omnes,

Having looked at Roman military tombstones for some time I wondered
how they might have looked when new. A couple of hours messing about
with a computer painting program and some [unfortunately rather low-
resolution] photos of a couple of tombstones produced the images
presented here. For your entertainment (click on thumbnails to enlarge):

Awesome! Thanks Big Grin

Welcome aboard, and as you're going to be told anyway, you should use at least your first real name in your signature.

Mea culpa. I've now edited my post to add my name.

Harry, what software are you using?

Hi Harry, welcome to the board! Interesting project, thanks for showing us: any chance of a high resolution image I can chuck into the powerpoint presentation for my roman military tombstones lecture next term? Please?!
cheers
Kate

I'd be happy to, but unfortunately the images I based these on are
themselves rather low resolution. I do have a better image of the Caelius
stone I could "paint" for you (I found it only after I was well on with the
one I posted above). Do you have a high resolution image of the Capito
stone, or can you point me to where I could get one on-line?

When would you need these by, approximately?

Uhm, Harry, did you notice the imagebase at the main site? We have 230+ records with fairly high-res photos of tombstones there. Capito and Caelius are, of course, among them. If you need higher res photos, you can ask me. I've got most of them at home.
Very nice reconstructions, by the way. Check out the imagebase and you'll find a few 'official' reconstructions.

The picture of the Capito stone that I used was in fact taken from
your imagebase. It was the only image from the page that I could
actually access when I first tried it. I am embarassed to admit that
I have only just now finally worked out how to access the higher
resolution images (of details of the stones) from the thumbnails on the
imagebase pages, since it seems to work in a somewhat non-intuitive
manner and is not explained anywhere (that I could see).

Anyway, having now resolved my confusion, I can now retrieve from
your imagebase the higher resolution images of the figure and
inscription of Capito's stone and "join them back together" in my
paint program, to get the higher resolution image that Kate Gilliver
has asked for.

The imagebase is a great resource, by the way!

Yes, I'll have to add a FAQ somewhere.

If you come up with nice hi-res reconstructions, I'd be happy to upload them to the imagebase. Certainly would add something to the grey stones!

Very good! Why did this man not receive any laudes yet?

Because I'd used mine up yesterday.

No hurry, Harry, I don't start teaching the course til October! Did you see the recent exhibition of painted sculpture in - somewhere in the Netherlands? I've seen the catalogue and it looked fantastic; there was a web-site - has someone got a link to it?
