Looking for books descibing the details of Roman battles - stevesarak - 05-04-2006 I’m currently reading the Conquest of Rome and in it Julius Caesar describes some of the battles in detail. Ex: the left flank was overrun, the Calvary crashed into the front lines, the Centurion told the men not to bunch up etc. I’m looking for other books descibing the details of Roman battles. Which books would recommend that are primarily about the battles and heavy in the details? Thanks Re: Looking for books descibing the details of Roman battles - Jona Lendering - 05-04-2006 Flavius Josephus' account of the siege of Jerusalem and Ammianus Marcellinus' account of the siege of Amida offer many details. Livy on the battles of Hannibal (especially Cannae). I hope this helps. Re: Looking for books descibing the details of Roman battles - Felix - 05-05-2006 For a modern work, find a copy of Gregory Daly's Cannae. He analyzes the battle the way Keegan did in The Face of Battle; it is an excellent work, IMHO. Re: Looking for books descibing the details of Roman battles - Medusa Gladiatrix - 05-05-2006 I could recommend the following secondary sources: Adrian Goldsworthy Roman Warfare 240 pages HarperCollins Publishers ISBN: 0060838523 Peter Connolly Greece and Rome at War 320 pages Greenhill Books ISBN: 185367303X Re: Looking for books descibing the details of Roman battles - Alexandr K - 05-05-2006 Hi, I think this book is essential for Roman battles: Goldsworthy, A. K.: The Roman Army at War 100BC-AD200, Oxford, 1996. And here are some interesting articles: Sabin, P.: The Face of Roman Battle, Journal of Roman Studies 90, 2000, 1-17. Sabin, P.: The Mechanics of Battle in the Second Punic War, in: The Second Punic War: A Reappraisal, BICS Supplement 67, 1996, 59-79. Zhmodikov, A.: Roman Republican heavy infantrymen in battle (IV-II centuries BC), Historia 49, 2000, 67-78. Veith, G.: Die Taktik der Kohortenlegion, Klio 7, 1907, 303-334. Greetings Alexandr Re: Looking for books descibing the details of Roman battles - stevesarak - 05-05-2006 Thanks, I'll look into those as well. You can never have too many books on battles and tactics.
