Work in progress - Praefectusclassis - 11-28-2001

Here's my pegaso Aquilifer. Partially finished now, still lots to do. And I should start using a neutral lightblue background for the photos, I know.
Once again, I'm impressed with your level of detail.

Are you undercoating all in Grey, or a mixture of grey and white?

Re: ... - Praefectusclassis - 11-29-2001

The grey you see is Humbrol primer. But before using oil, I apply basecoats as well. The socks and tunica will be white.
Greets
Jasper, I don't understand why I can't ever see ANY of your photos -- not your icon, or any images you've posted. Any ideas, anyone?
Valde Bene! I'm quite impressed. Quite the
workmanship Jasper. How do you do it? Such
detail is hard to come by.
Re: Great Picture - Praefectusclassis - 12-08-2001

Thanks!
How do I do it? Well, except for the obvious: practice, there are some things I've found out or picked up.
- Buy a good figure, well sculpted and moulded figures are easier to paint! Metal figures have an advantage for ancient figures, see below
- Good lighting. If you can't see what you're doing, you're not going to get anywhere. And for that lighting use daylight bulbs (blueish light) or only paint with sunlight. The light of normal bulbs is too yellowish, makes for strange effects!
- Use good quality brushes and paint with the largest possible bursh. I had a tendency to use too small brushes for larger areas.
- Armour is quite easy to paint on metal figures, as long as it's supposed to be iron. Just rub the metal with steel wire to polish it up and then paint it with a mixture of varnish and a little black. After that, be careful no to overpaint!
- As I said before, oils are great for faces. Colours are richer and they dry longer, making it easier to employ subtle changes. In fact, I believe there are three different shades for both highlights and shadows on his face.
More questions? Fire away!
Greets
Sounds like quite a few great tips Jasp. Thanks
Where do you usually get your models?
Online? In store?
Re: Great Picture - Praefectusclassis - 12-12-2001

Usually got my models in store (but there aren't many over here that carry a good selection of Romans) and at shows. I've also tried mail order from Historex Agents for instance.
Say, with the sword on the left, is the aquilifer a centurion?
Aulus
Re: Great Picture - Praefectusclassis - 12-13-2001

Nope, doesn't mean that. Actually, see this recent thread for the sword as an indication of rank.

This model is based on the inscription with depiction of Lucius Sertorius Firmus, aquilifer of Legio XI Claudia:
CIL 05, 03375.

L(ucius) Sertorius L(uci) f(ilius) / Pob(lilia) Firmus / signif(er) aquil(ifer) leg(ionis) XI / Claud(iae) Piae Fidelis / missus curat(or) veter(anorum) / leg(ionis) eiusdem / Domitiae L(uci) f(iliae) / Priscae uxori

Lucius Sertorius Firmus, son of Lucius, of the tribe Poblilia, signifer and aquilifer of Legio XI Claudia, Faithful and Loyal, then commander of the veterans of that legion. (This was erected by) Domitia Prisca, daugther of Lucius, his wife.

LSF was signifer, then aquilifer and later commander of the veterans, but not centurion and he would've made notice of that.
Greets
