Making My First Subarmalis - jsantell - 03-09-2006

I am constructing my first subarmalis and focale now that I have my tunic done. I have some very fine linen saved for this. I plan on making it front opening with ties to close it up. Anyone have any advice or insights they can share with me? One tip that was passed along to me is the make the outboard side of the pad a little higher than the inboard side on the shoulders to get the shoulder guards more horizontal. I'm thinking 1/2 inch inboard and 3/4 inch outboard. I plan on using my left over wool scraps from my tunic project as stuffing. The focale will be a 24 inch square (if I have enough material left over from the subarmalis).Thoughts anyone? Smile

Check out the padded armor thread, especially the last few pages for patterns and pictures of several subarmalia. Especially scroll through pages 9-14(!) for patterns and images.

Also check out the earlier pages for images of possible subarmalia in art.

You should also check out the Florentius website

And also check out my site if you plan on doing pteruges.

I'm going to use Roberts pattern but modify it to open in the front and give it those armpit flaps. I should be able to make it fit the neck a bit better by doing that. Also I'm going to modify the shoulder pads and make them a little thicker outboard to get the shoulder guards to hand a little more horizontal. Pictures to come after completion!

Well. I almost screwed up again with my measurements. I measured my waist which is 36 iches and my chest which is 42 inches in my normal clothing and started woking on my subarmalis pattern for my as yet unmade segmentata. Just for the heck of it I put on my baggy wool tunica and the measurements changed to waist- 46 inches and chest 47 inches. The baggy tunic added 10 inches to my waist but only 5 inches to my chest. Using my modern clothing the subarmalis would have been way too small. All that baggy wool added a lot to my dimensions! Just a thought that I should post over in the padded armor discusion is that with a larger size wool tunic there is a lot of padding built in!

I based my subarmalis in the thoracomacus as jacket openend in the front. Instead of padded it with layers and layers of cloths I use a “foldedâ€

Titus,
I am making my subarmalis very similar to yours. I am adding the shoulder pads and the armpit flaps though. Great minds think alike. Smile
