Roman Army Talk / romanarmy.com Conference - caiusbeerquitius - 03-09-2006
This morning it occured to me that it would really make sense, if we would start a conference series for RAT / RA.com
We have many specialists here, and many reenactors with practical experience. There couldn't be a better starting position. If we made a annual conference, we could have online publications of the papers presented, and the participants of the conference could take part on excursions, museum visits, and so on.
I would volunteer to organise the first conference here in Augsburg, the former Municipium Aelia Augusta, capital of the Roman province of Raetia. We could go to the Roman Museum, see a few historical sites in the city, and have the paper presentations in the Kongresshalle. As I also work for the roman museum, it would probably be possible to have a 'closer' look on some of the exhibits.
What do you guys think? Who would be interested?

I think this is a good idea, and the fact that you are connected to the Museum makes it even better. I could present a paper on the use of ancient sources for the study of Germania Inferior and Germania Superior, which includes some remarks on the written sources on the battle in the Teutoburg Forest. I will watch this topic with sincere interest.

Perhaps it is prudent to select a date right now, which makes it a lot easier to discuss these things. A long weekend in September or October? A friend of mine has been working at the Cuijk excavation (a Roman bridge; [url:2karlwgo]http://www.livius.org/ct-cz/cuijk/cuijk.html[/url]) and knows an awful lot about the way Roman engineers fitted these constructions in the landscape; as soon as I know a date, I can invite Richard.

September or October would not be good for me though. Apart from PhD finishing stress (which could need escaping), I need to teach classes (which won't bear escape). Just about any time before or after that is fine for me though.

I agree with Jasper that september en october are busy month for me too. Later is better for me, but I like to come to this kind of conference! Sounds like a very good idea! But I don't know enough do do some lecture, but like to get knowledge "in real" from all of you.

The idea sounds good, and I'm at Augusta Vindelicum several times a year, anyway. However, August and September are filled to capacity.
November is a grey and ugly month, but the Christmas-chaos has not completely started :lol:

That looks like positive feedback.
So everyone who wants to participate as a lecturer should write a proposal with title of the text and an estimation for the time needed for the lecture into this thread, so that we can work out a schedule. Should we look for a hotel for all people together, or should everyone look for their accommodations themselves?

For the exhibition itself, nothing. However it would need to be collected,transported and returned somehow, perhaps by courier, could the museum afford that?

November would probably be good for me too. The re-enactment season would be over and my wife would not be so bothered about me being away so much, unless something expected pops up. It would also give me something realistic to aim for if I felt I had anything worth writing and presenting a paper on (which I may have, given that I have been sitting on a particular idea ever since leaving university back at the end of 1993). We will see. In any case I would like to be there to hear what others have to say, as well as meeting some of you face to face.

Fantastic Idea - the more conferences the better as they propogate ideas better than even publications do - the recent ASCS conference (Australasian Society for Classical Studies) at Hobart in Tasmania had more than 120 20 minute papers presented in 4 parallel sessions - there is nothing better to confirm collegiality and camaraderie in our studies.
I would fully support it and even try to get a travel grant to go from Australia - and probably present a paper on Frontinus, Polyaenus or the representation of Roman forts (which is what I should be working on!)
