Searching for high-quality books - Titus Martius - 02-22-2006

Hi!
I'm searching for good books about romans. I have all books on romans from Osprey and some by Goldsworthy, Connoly and Le Bohec, but I want more, for example about strategy or campaigns. I hope that someone will help me.

Re: Searching for high-quality books - FAVENTIANVS - 02-23-2006

John Warry's Warfare in the classical world 1981.

Re: Searching for high-quality books - Jeroen Pelgrom - 02-23-2006

or:
- Greece and Rome at War by Peter Connolly
- Caesar by Theodore Ayrault Dodge
- Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire : From the First Century A.D. to the Third by Edward N. Luttwak
- The Making of the Roman Army: From Republic to Empire by Lawrence Keppie

I expect, you being Czech, that you read German?

Elton, Hugh (1996): Warfare in Roman Europe AD 350-425, (Oxford).
Junkelmann, Marcus (1986): Die Legionen des Augustus, (Mainz).
Junkelmann, Marcus (1990-2): Die Reiter Roms, 3 vols., (Mainz).
Hoffmann, Dietrich (1969): Das Spätrömische Bewegungsheer und die Notitia Dignitatum, 2 vols., Epigraphische Studien 1, (Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn).
Nicasie, Martijn (1997): Twilight of Empire, the Roman Army from the Reign of Diocletian until the Battle of Adrianople, (Thesis Publishers Amsterdam).

Many thanks!
I'm going to order these books.

I have one more question - Does someone know title about roman navy? I have conway's The age of the galley, but this book is not generally about romans.

Re: Searching for high-quality books - Praefectusclassis - 02-23-2006

There are not too many books generally available on the Roman navy.
If you read German and English, they would be, in no particular order:
- Ch.G.Starr, The Roman Imperial Navy (3rd ed, Chicago 1963)
- H.D.L.Viereck, Die Römische Flotte (Herford 1975)
- D.Kienast, Untersuchungen zu den Kriegsflotten der römischen Kaiserzeit (Bonn 1968) (very hard to find)
- H.C. Konen, Classis Germanica (Pharos, St.Katharinen 2000)
- D.J.P.Mason, Roman Britain and the Roman Navy (2003)
- Christoph Rummel (2006?)
- Florian Himmler (200?)
- Jasper Oorthuys (2007)

Re: Searching for high-quality books - Robert Vermaat - 02-23-2006

And for the enemies of Rome I can recommend:
Haywood, John (1991): Dark Age Naval Power, A Reassessment of Frankish and Anglo-saxon Seafearing Activity (Anglo-Saxon Books, repr. 1999).

Excellent book in my opinion !

The Viereck book is somewhat crappy...

You could also try to get copies of:
-BAATZ, D. u. R. BOCKIUS, 1997, Vegetius und die römische Flotte, Bonn.
-CASSON, L., 1985, Ships and Seamanship in the Ancient World, Baltimore/London.

If you want to know more about late Roman river patrol craft, try:
-FERKEL, H., KONEN, H. u. Ch. SCHÄFER, (Hrsg.), 2004, Navis Lusoria. Ein Römerschiff in Regensburg, St. Katharinen.
(includes a very early article from me - unfortunately with a few unpleasant errors  )

Thanks for that Florian. Didn't want to say it

Re: Searching for high-quality books - FAVENTIANVS - 02-27-2006

The Roman army at war by Adrian K. Goldsworthy.

Re: Searching for high-quality books - Titus Martius - 02-27-2006

Most of recommended books I already got which I am pleased with. Missing titles I will order soon.

Many thanks to all.

Re: Searching for high-quality books - Eleatic Guest - 05-27-2006

Does CASSON, L., 1985, Ships and Seamanship in the Ancient World, Baltimore/London exist by chance in a Spanish translation? It is kind of weird, I looked up the most recommended books on Roman military history, the all time classics, and practically nothing exists in a Spanish translation! Heck, there dont even is an amazon.es, talk about world language!

Indeed...excellent news. Smile

Will you favor us with the title or the subject matter (other than "It's about Rome.") so we have an idea of what to look forward to?
