Construction Videos - emj1s - 02-08-2006

Salve,

I am working on a web-site for legioXI and one of the members brought up kit construction videos. I am very excited about doing this, but what I'm asking for are "requests" or common questions, that these videos could solve/answer. The videos would be free, Internet based files for all to use. All ideas or actual video clip donation would be wonderful.

A video on Scuta construction would be very desirable - Neuraleanus - 02-12-2006

You can get a bit more information from the legio XXX site:

Start with the building of the press. Then show the construction of the blank. There is some evidence to suggest that the fabric should go on before the back bracing. Describe the handle in detail. On the last scuta that I made I used handles made from oak. There are many choices for the fabric covering. One popular choice is to start with linen and then cover the front with leather. Rims can either rawhide or brass. We've been buying bosses from Mark Morrow. 14 gauge, either brass or steel, is preferred. Painting is another issue. Milk paint, encaustic, or simply modern house paint, are all possibilities.
