Khairete,
is this King of Bactria a son of Alexander to an Indian Queen, as is thought?

This is Sophytes:

"Nobody knows who Sophytes was. Cunningham thought he was the Indian prince Sopeithes; others think he was a Persian satrap."

The first sentence seems to sum things up quite well.

cheers,

Re: Descendants of Alexander - hoplite14gr - 02-06-2006

It is not unlikely that after defeating Poros and on his way to the sea Alex, spend some "quality time" win Indian princeces.
It is also likely that the kings of the Greco-Bactrian kindoms and the even Menadros (Milinda) found it policaly usefull to claim blood ties from him.
Kind regards

Re: Descendants of Alexander - Arthes - 02-07-2006

Khairete,
it was written that Alexander had 'relationships' with two members of Asian royalty that produced children; one with Queen Cleothis of Massaga (now Northern Pakistan) (Justin 12.7.11) and another source, with the daughter of Raja Kida Hindi.
As is known, the Kalash tribe of the Pakistan Hindu Kush claim descendant from Alexander's soldiers and even Alexander himself.
This article makes some points that, if true, certainly could mean connections to Macedonia, as some of their furniture is said to be the same as found in Vergina... [url:e0w87xde]http://www.creternity.com/article.phtml?articleID=7&page=1&catID=3[/url]

Can't tell if some of them decesnt from Alexander but at a period the Greco Baktrian kingdoms had a sizable Greek population.
As I had said before people simply do not disapear because historians say so.
A brief hiestory of these Kingdoms after Alexander´s death here in this wargamers site::

Nobody said they didn't like you as Alexander, Gioi. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing you in your new panoply.

There may be a couple of Alexander's admirers visiting the Festival, who are looking forward to seeing a portrayal of Phillipos and hopefully Alexandros...!
Gioi, in that photo with your lovely daughter, I thought you had a look of Alex.....!

Re: Descendants of Alexander - Arthes - 02-14-2006

Quote:I got you Cristy, Sopites does resemblance the coin of Alex from Babylon, my only question is, if he does look like himself as real person similar to his portrait coins, if it does, so he did look like his possible Patera or Papouli

Well I just read 'Funeral Games' (Mary Renault) and according to her Alexander IV had dark hair like his mother, which is entirely possible with any children of Alexander by dark haired ladies...
Sophytes is one possibility for the child of Alexander and the Indian Queen, it's finding out more about him...

Quote:PS: My Issus portrait was a joke! I edit it, but I think I do resemblance Issus mosaic a bit & not the real Alex, Danno Ulpius does ....But I feel like them: Alalalalai!!!![Image: ht_charge.gif]
I think you resemble the family.....

Quote:& have you noticed that Alex in the Issus mosaic look like Al Pacino?
I knew he reminded me of someone.......! Al-exander Pacino...... Big Grin
