Any pictures of the Concesti helmet? - Virilis - 01-20-2006

Salve!

Does anyone know if there are pictures of the Concesti (Romania) late roman helmet available anywhere?

Thanx,

Old thread but heres an unusual top down picture of this helmet. Is that a slot for a crest in the central ridge section, or is it a trick of the light?

Paul, I think it is a trick of light, the crest seems to be complete without any slots / holes. Here is attached an annoyingly small colour picture of the helmet which I found from my files:

You can see that the helmet is two-coloured, with silver and gold on some decorative patterns. In Simon James`s article (he draws on Klumbach`s older work on late roman helmets, http://www.persee.fr/articleAsPDF/syria_0039-7946_1986_num_63_1_6923/article_syria_0039-7946_1986_num_63_1_6923.pdf) about the development of late roman helmet he claims that the basis of the Concesti helmet was made of iron and brass (the crest was brass for example). Has the original helmet been intentionally two-coloured or is it just due to the difference of the material where the gilding has been put on(iron and brass) and gilding disappearing unevenly during the centuries? Anyway it would be cool to make a two-coloured recostruction of this helmet  ! If any of the russian members of RAT are reading this, can you please help in getting some more info (colour pics perhaps) about this very interesting helmet? It seems that the helmet belongs to the collections of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg...

Ps. interestingly the Burgh Castle helmet could have been quite like the Concesti helmet, check this picture out and compare them:

I think I agree with Jyrki on the ridge.

About the colors, I assume that the color scheme was intentional. Gilded material disappearing unevenly would be odd, either you remove it all or not, and it does not 'wear away' either I think. But I'd looove to see high-res color images of this helmet! Big Grin

About the Burgh Castle: yes, it belongs to the same family, but it seems to be less like the Concesti than, say, the Deurne. The Burgh is less 'high'.

Re: Any pictures of the Concesti helmet? - Virilis - 02-14-2012

Robert, I still think the Burgh Castle is quite like the Concesti one! if you look at the side profile of the helmet, the shape is conical like the Concesti helmet. Deurne and other helmets have a more round side profile. It is also noteworthy that when you add a base ring it makes the bowl higher...

All part of the same family, but no twins.
I shan't open the discussion whether the Burgh even had a base ring...

THANKS!!!!!!!!! :woot: We have been waiting for photos like these forever! Mega-laudes! By Jove, Sofia Vergara and all the best things in the world! It seems also that it was not completely gilded, perhaps rather two-coloured (silver & gold). This is my next helmet if I ever get one...

Nathan, some new pictures indeed, but no new helmets - which ones did you not know of?

Re: Any pictures of the Concesti helmet? - Nathan Ross - 09-14-2012

It's mainly new pictures, yes.

But I'd never seen that 'Jarak' helmet before! (unless I'd just confused it with something else - quite likely...)

Edit: - also the two Intercisa helmets on the right of the picture here, with the fin crests and the ribbed rims. Interesting!

It's one of the newer ones, that's right.

Those are part of the 'old' Intercisa collection (the back row are modern reconstruction), two of which are also shown separate on this page. Of course, these helmets are 'pieced together' from the remains of 40-odd helmets, so none of them might be original.

Absent from the list were the Koblenz helmets (the ones with the 'earpiece')...
