What sort of device should I use for Demophilos?

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - hoplite14gr - 02-15-2007

We do not have info that he was a SPARTOS (indigenous-autochthon) so the Beotian snake is not beyond doubt but not unlikely either.
So white cresent on black background and "encased" in red Beotian shield outline to play safe.
Choose one of the 3 Doric tribes menandros decoration for the shield´s edge.

Feeling adventurous: Black dog's head with red eyes (Hecate´s hound) on bronze.

Melena Afroditi and Hecate were patron deities of Thespiae.

Kind regards

I like snakes (and they like me...) so that's a possibility, but the dog's head is also appealing. In either case, I'd need a picture to show me how they were presented ( in profile/full face, with coils/bends) and I don't know which of the menandroi are Doric. Can you suggest where I might research these things, please?

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - hoplite14gr - 02-16-2007

"dreadlocks Paul" snake is a fine example of the Beotian "Spartoi".
dogs heads hmmm....Pereus project image base, I guess.

Menandroi as I have posted before:
Wave patern: Hylleis
"key" patern likle my chiton: Dymanes
Spiral patern : Pamfilleis

See the previous posted links on Spartan shields for menandroi

Kind regards

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - Wulf - 02-17-2007

Maybe you should get a two headed Snake!!! this would be more fitting!!

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - hoplite14gr - 02-17-2007

Sorry to disapoint you Wulf but so far the only multiheaded serpent on Greek shields are the 9-headed Hydra of the Argive kings and the 5-headed Hydra of the Argive Sacred Band.

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - Mythos_Ruler - 02-17-2007

What kind of designs would go with the 10 Athenian tribes?

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - hoplite14gr - 02-17-2007

In Athens there were not "tribe-regiment" insignia.
At least none that can be identified beyond reasonable doubt.
There were just the "fratria" (fraternity) emblem and the city-state "national" emblem. Plus the Marines would have their own devices.

We are still researching the aspect of the "menandros style decoration" of the Ionians to have link with the Athenina tribes but nothing conclusive as yet.

Kind regards

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - Mythos_Ruler - 02-18-2007

Thanks for the reply. I suspected the Athenians didn't have tribal emblems, but I wasn't sure.

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - hoplite14gr - 02-18-2007

I answered only with the reservation that nothing positive has been identified on the ""Phyle"-tribe yet.
We only know the "Genos"-clans that comprised the epilektoi hoplites.

Kind regards

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - Mythos_Ruler - 02-18-2007

Hmmmm, would the Athenian Epilektoi have used the "alpha" insignia for their shields?

(Secondly, off-topic, but approximately how numerous were Epilektoi in Athens in the 4th century? Just curious as to how large a force of Epilektoi could be assumed to take the front lines in battle)

Re: Hoplite Shield Designs - hoplite14gr - 02-18-2007

Herodotus states 300 epilektoi in Platea.
Usually they were kept to that number on any single campaign.
They were more but not more than300 mumber were sent in action
After the bleeding of the Pelopenesian war, Ifikrates had only 60.
Last mentioned in a carving giving honors to Demetrios the "besieger".

So far we have evidence of the Alpha being used in the shields provided for the hoplitodromy and these were state property, hence they were marked with the Alpha.

Kind regards
