Best actor - Julius Caesar - Tarbicus - 11-13-2005

I'm very impressed with Ciarán Hinds as Caesar in 'Rome' so far. Then I got to thinking as to the other actors to play him so far. The list is plentiful, but from this lot whose do you think was the best portrayal so far?

Then I remembered Kenneth Williams.

CAESAR - Graham Sumner - 11-14-2005

I have always thought that Patrick Stewart would have been a good choice for Caesar. (He would certainly be used to wearing red!) However as he is getting a bit older like the rest of us perhaps Ralph Fiennes might be more suitable for an up to date version.

As for previous versions, Rex Harrison certainly had the charm, and the dialog at the beginning of Cleopatra (1963) when the Romans arrive at Alexandria is superb. As are the Roman soldiers uniforms for that date. I think no other film of the big epic era, with the exception of The Fall of the Roman Empire, paid so much attention to contemporary research on Roman costume.

Graham.

Re: Best actor - Julius Caesar - Theodosius the Great - 11-14-2005

Patrick Stewart, Sejanus :?:

That guy NEVER ages. I think he'd be great.

For me it's Rex all the way :!: Big Grin

Re: Best actor - Julius Caesar - Comerus Gallus - 11-14-2005

Why you skip two more actors as Caesar?

1) Charton HestonSadJulius Caesar?)

2) Louis CalhernSad Julius Caesar 1953)

Yea!, first: the most charismatic Rex Harrison..... I like it

second : Timothy Dalton

Third: Jeremy Sisto

I haven't seen Charlton Heston's movie & HBO Rome jet... Sad

Hi Comerus

If you mean the 1949 version of JC then Charlton Heston played Antony, the same role as he did opposite Gielgud (1969) and in his own version of Antony and Cleopatra (1972). I doubt whether many people have seen the 1949 version as it was an amateur film.

If you want to go further back in time for other JC'S try amongst others Claude Rains in Caesar and Cleopatra (1945)

Greets - Uwe

Salvete,
I guess for my money I would have to go with Rex Harrison.
Most of the classicly trained British actors do an exceptional job
in almost every film; drama or comedy.
I do believe Ciaran Hines is a great actor given
the number of varied roles he's portrayed.
I'd like to see him get a few votes, too.

Charlton Heston - Graham Sumner - 11-14-2005

Hello Tarbicus

Have you seen the three Charlton Heston figures available from Sideshow? Sadly in the costumes from Planet of the Apes. Nevertheless if you wanted you could always replace the awful Ignite Roman legionary figure with the Heston one!

Graham.

Yup, and they're very good.

LOL. Unfortunately, after 'Bowling For Columbine' I think I'd rather put the Sid James doll in the Ignite figure  But, Charles Hawtrey as the Republican Marching Pack figure would be faithful to the Carry On doll, don't you think? Big Grin Whatever happened to Chuck after 'Soylent Green'?

(I think I'm about to lose my medal)

Better than losing your mettle!

I'd say Ciarán Hinds is my favorite. His portrayal comes across as sincere, and he's a very charismatic person. Hinds plays out the scheming, yet straight-forward character very well...like he did as the Russian president in Sum of All Fears.

Huh. I'm going to have to watch Excalibur again just to see him. I can't place his face in that film.

I knew I'd seen him one other place, so thanks for posting that link to his IMDB page. I saw his credit for Road to Perdition, a great movie that I loved.
