Judging by the tunics and armour this is supposed to be somewhere in the fourth or early fifth century. Do you have any further data? And where does he get the female clothes? I know slit-side skirts and separate short tunics from reconstructions of Migration-era Germanic clothes, but Roman?

What book is this from. Might be worth getting for 'recruitment' puposes.
If I'm not mistaking it comefrom Ancient Celts Concord: http://img331.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... s012ry.jpg

Hi Arthes, Comerus,

it might be of interest for You that one guy from Berlin ( http://www.zinnfiguren-stefan-loewe.de ) has transformed the nice little scene into a flat diorama, dating the time corridor back to the first century CE, and even Sean Connery looks a bit younger ...

Hi Arthes and Comerus,

Arthes, referring to Your former avatar (I mean that with the beautiful lady not the warrior with the late Roman helmet) I thought You were the one with the blue dress and white scarf on the left ...

Comerus, good interpretation!

Leather (ahem) Dildos? - tlclark - 11-25-2005

Carlton Bach,

I can't believe I am asking this...but... I just need to know.

Quote:leather phalluses for use as dildos

Where on earth did you get this reference?

It might be relevant for my studies on the lorica musculata, and YES I'm serious. If they can make molded leather phalluses, they can certainly make molded leather armor.

Quote:(these would be hell to reconstruct - I've been working on a hardening technique that stands up to warmth and moisture)

I don't want to know how you "field" test your "reconstruction", Confusedhock: but please Let me know what you've found out.

I am going to attempt to make molded leather tongue pteruges this January and I will happily share any thing I learn for your...ahem...little project. Confusedhock:

Johns, Catherine: Sex or Symbol. Erotic Images of Greece and Rome, British Museum Publications, London 1982 discusses them in the context of ancient Greek heterosexual pornography. Generally, searching indices for 'olisbos' should help. Unfortunately, none have been found that i know of, spo the assumption that they are made of leather is based largely on the fact that Southern European penitentials in the 9th and 10th century mention leather as a material. Polished wood is equally possible, though some depictions show what looks like seams along the lower edge. Obviously, I can't speak for the relative merits of either material.

Actually, the hardening technique in question is for a pencase and lamellar armour for a frtied. Though if I manage an olisbos I think I'll enter it into an SCA competition, just for giggles.

My latest attempt (before real life intervened) was drying out the leather in a gentle oven, then hardening it by soaking in hide glue treated with 10% of dry weight alum for moiture resistance. Hide glue stands up to heat well above the boiling point, but is very water-sensitive. Alum reduces that. The technique works, but I haven't had the opportunity to destruct-test pieces yet.

Consernig the "leather phalluses for use as dildos" it is mentioned in Aristophanes "Lysistrati" and in a fragment of a court speech, I think Lyssias,
in descriptionof an "immoral act". Kind regards

No unfortunately, the young lady in the blue dress is who resembles my daughter......the previous avatar was not unlike me in my late teens - rather obsessed with Ancient Greece in those days
I discovered those split side dresses are actually what the Spartan ladies wore.....

Re: Provincial campfollower (prostitute) kit - tlclark - 11-26-2005

Thanks all for the information regarding leather molded phalluses or olisboi.

If my wife asks what I was doing, tell her I was asking about molded leather armor.

(of course that doesn't explain what I was doing in this forum to begin with!!) Confusedhock:

Thanks again,

travis

Ah, that one. We had interesting discussions about it. Some archeologists claimed it was actually for - use - but I don't think the evidence bears this out. More likely a carefully crafted flint knapper whose owner was proud of his endowments, or would have liked to be.

It is very pretty, thats for sure.
