Lorica Segmentata Versions-how many - arklore70 - 10-19-2005

How many versions of the Lorica Segmentata are known to exist?

I am tracking four and maybe a fifth.

A/B/New/Kal and perhaps a version as depicted in Trajan's Column.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I thought there was a Corbridge "C" that was incomplete am I right?

Yes, there is considered to be a Corbridge 'C' that has minor differences from the B.

I'd be wary of taking the armor shown on Trajan's Column too 'literally' considering there are other things like helmets that don't match any known artifacts- there could be a fair bit of artistic licence in what's depicted. In terms of iconographic representations, I believe there is at least one more type of segmented armor on a major monument, but it completely escapes me at the moment- hopefully someone else can cay.

There seems to have been a steady progression in lorica segmentata development, so our classification of "types" is due entirely to the small sample size we have and may be way off or even irrelevent. But so far, the following have been identified by various scholars (with the major type followed by sub-types):

Kalkriese
A & B

Corbridge
A, B & C

Newstead
Zugmantel, Stillfried & Iza variants

http://www.mcbishop.co.uk/loricaseg/newstead.htm

Alba Iulia

http://www.mcbishop.co.uk/loricaseg/albaiulia.htm

The Alba Iulia is a scale-segmented hybrid interpreted from the 3rd century relief of the same name.

Some illustrations of various types of lorica seg in reconstructed form can be found on the Legio VI website, here:
