OOOOOOHHH! The lost roman soldiers from York!! It has been a long time...
I didn't know the one about the centurion on the moor. Any idea what color his tunic was.. Like... green?
Another verson I read has the centurion chased away by the hound of the Baskerville. Lived on the moors too..

According to the guide, they are thought to be 'The Lost Legion' members of the Legio IX who 'disappeared' after leaving York in around 120AD.
As they were also described as carrying round shields, it is also thought they may be part of a later auxiliary troop.
The atmostphere down there is very strange...!

Actually these ghost soldiers are from 60 AD. The Ninth legion Hispana was quickly coming down from York to Camulodunum, present day Colchester, which had just been sacked and burned by queen Boudicca's warriors.
They were caught in an ambush on the way and it seems the main part of the legion, round 2,000 men was KIA. According to ancient sources the general commanding those troops, Petilius Cerialis, barely escaped with his life and the cavalry.
The figure of 2,000 KIA is actually deducted from the fact that 2,000 legionary reinforcements were later brought from Germany after the rebellion was put down.
The funny thing is: why a plumber? 8)

I'm a little hazy on the details because I heard the story years ago, but somewhere in Shrophsire is supposedly the remains of a Roman silver mine, haunted by a sentry who was killed when part of it collapsed. Why it isn't haunted by miners I don't know - perhaps slaves didn't have the right to become ghosts... :roll:

There is another not so well known ghost story from The Treasurers House, York, which I had mentioned during my visit.
I read about it in a book I have 'Ghosts of an Ancient City' by John V. Mitchell
The previous owner of the house, Mr. Frank Green was hosting a fancy dress party and at one point guests were given leave to explore the house. One of the lady guests decided to visit the cellars and was just about to explore a passage when a Roman soldier appeared. She assumed he was a guest and tried to pass him but he barred the passage with his spear and indicated without speaking that she was not to proceed any further.
She returned back to the party and asked her host who this soldier had been and was told nobody there was dressed as a Roman.
This would have been sometime between 1897 and 1930. when he was the owner.
The house is built directly over the Roman Via Decumana...

Tarbicus, I agree with the explanation. While passing by it is said the roman soldiers exclaimed "oh, look, a plumber actually doing some plumbing!"
Must have been some memorable party there.. Ahem.. I also remember a party like that. Round 2:30 AM I went for a breather in the garden and I had a long talk with a couple of aliens. I think they came from Alpha Centauri.. Or Beta Centauri.. Anyways one them Centaurii.
They were no ghosts mind you. Very real. One of them kissed me goodbye when they left. I hope it was the female.
I passed out just after that.
And yes there is definitely someone appearing there on that table but I don't think it's a ghost since that person looks like one of them aliens I met at the party..
