Insurance Liabilities for Spectator Injuries - Lucius Cornelius Traianus - 08-17-2005
Dear Spanish Comrades,
I was wondering what your groups are doing with regards to Civil Insurance. I know of only one group in BALNES, GIRONA, that actually have taken out a Civil Insurance Policy in case of physical injury to an on looking spectator.
Aitor you might know of this subject. We have been reenacting for nearly 4 years alone and with other groups, but the possible liability charges come up from time to time specially when we reenact in front of the public.

Well, to tell you teh truth I take care of the 'technical' side of my group but I get seldomly involved in logistics! :|
I know that we have some kind of limited insurance for our displays and we try to have an ambulance at hand (last year, the Red Cross 'forgot' to come... :evil: )
Perhaps some others will have more detailed information...

Just for information:
We estonian re-enactors have no ambulance or insurances and our fights are almost full-force. (althought only those can fight, who have proven, that they know the rules and have the wisdom to know the line..)

yes, i heard about sometimes people being killed in these live steel battles.. Or rather, that was told me about re-enactors from Belarus.

Oh the guys from Belarus...
. They are legendary. Some of them make some kind of special-alloy swords, that are strong, but like half- lighter, than usual steel swords. But to be killed.... that sounds a bit like a fisherman`s tale. I`ve heard about a hand being chopped off, but killings are a bit too much... even for them.
But then again, go figure....

I can't answer for groups outside the US, but Legio III Cyrenaica is a member UNIT in the Living History Association, which provides liability (for spectator injuries or property damage) for its member units. I am also a member of the LHA and as an individual member I get a minimal amount of medical coverage if I am injured.
The public in the USA is much more prone to hire a lawyer and sue if injured, even if the injured person was doing something he or she should not have been. It may be vastly different in countries where the public is (or has been) in the habit of assuming more personal responsibility for their own behavior.

I have looked into an insurance policy for our group. Found one Catalana Occidente suited for us.
It covers Limited Liability up to 150.000€ / year
Limited Liability for each possible victim of 60.000€
Total Premium 213€ / year.
I will have to pass it through the membership.

Public liability insurance is pretty much mandatory here in Britain for groups doing public displays. English Heritage, for example, refuses to book any group with less than £2,000,000 public liability cover, and other bodies expect the same and more. My own group, the R.M.R.S, currently has about £5,000,000 cover. This does not cover injuries to members of the group. We all take out our own private accident and injury insurance to cover our own injuries.
