Roman Garrison in Caesarea Maritima - sicarii sam - 07-31-2005
Ive been reading alot about the Jewish Revolt of 66AD and was curious whether a roman camp that was permanent would be inside or outside the city walls. Thanks. do we have any archaeology of roman military in Caesarea ?

If I remember correctly (and there is no reason I should, but that aside), Caesarea Maritima came with extensive fortifications and a palace complex. I don't recall any Ropman camp being found, nor do I think one would have been necessary. The typical military camps in the west are largely there because there was no native infrastructure to use. A garrison the size of Pilate's might well fit into the facilities the previous occupants left with no need to build.
Anyone with more detailed info on the East? I was left with the impression that the Romans frequently used Hellenistic facilities for smaller troop concentrations, or just billeted them.

Don't know if this helps but a few years back a book was published on digs at Caesarea Maritima. In fact, it may have been 10 years ago, so forgive me if I am a little off. The title I remember was "King Herod's Dream: Caesara Martima."
