Mail closure hooks - madoc - 06-28-2005 A bit off topic, I imagine, but......... does anyone have any information on pre-roman mail closure hooks ? I have some sculpture evidence and also the report on the kirkburn mail. I also have some pictures of some strange things in the national museum in Wales that are tentatively believed to be the real mccoy............. are they all single piece ?? pre-Roman?? - Caius Fabius - 06-29-2005 Are you talking about pre 700BC stuff or what? I personally suspect the use of leather/iron bands as closures as well, but they ar enot likely to survive in archaeology.. sebastiaan Sebastiaan Re: Mail closure hooks - madoc - 06-30-2005 The stuff in the national museum is def not closure hooks. I have the drawings, some sort of horse harness I'd guess. Shame, as it's from the seven sisters hoard that was dated to 1st AD due to the roman horse harness present. I have a pic of a fastener found at stanwick around the turn of the century, obviously unstratified. Same with the Polden Hill one (still waiting image on that one). I am referring to what appears to be a bar that stretches between the doublings.
