Helmet - Conal - 06-13-2005

That rather spiffing lamellar helmet ... what date would you put on it historically ?

Around the 6th-7th century I think... Frankish.

posting a pikky - Conal - 06-14-2005

I have tried and failed .... its the one with the bulbous top which is made up from numerous lamels insted of segments.

I believe it was shown in the Late Roman Soldier Osprey Warrior title.

Ivan,
That one is said to be Avar.

Helmet - Conal - 06-14-2005

Where can one find pikkys of the original ?

Re: "Barbarian" military equipment studies - FAVENTIANVS - 06-14-2005

The helmet was found in Germany, at Niederstotzingen, Grave 12.
My Osprey Germanic Warrior book says it's an Allamanic 6th century helmet... but osprey books can fail too.

Re: "Barbarian" military equipment studies - Robert Vermaat - 06-15-2005

Since it was found in an Alamannic grave, I suppose that would account for the Osprey quote. But the technique of lamellar helmets was not Alamannic. I'll look it up, it is shown in several of my books.

Re: "Barbarian" military equipment studies - FAVENTIANVS - 06-15-2005

It is an impressive helmet anyway! Yeah, it looks kinda eastern...

Re: "Barbarian" military equipment studies - Robert Vermaat - 06-15-2005

The brow piece has Longobard parallels, a famous one known as the Agilulf piece. The guuards on both sides of the king also wear this helmet!

Ok, I've found the real type: Ponto-Caucasian, meaning the north and east of the Black Sea:
