The guilty party... - Antonius Lucretius - 05-20-2005

The people who designed "Gladiator" armours.

Nice greek cuirasses, though.. Well IMHO..

Very long spear, but pretty impressive.

Re: The guilty party... - Robert Vermaat - 05-21-2005

Yep, that's The Troop at Wroxeter, I believe in 2003?
I just hope it has nothing to do with armordillo...

Although I know of a Dutch knight who claims he has a plastic Roman saddle.. could be the same.. :? roll:

They seem to have built the armours for 'Gladiator'!

Re: The guilty party... - Carus Andiae - 05-22-2005

The Gothic armour's okay, but it ain't re-enactment quality.

Re: The guilty party... - Antonius Lucretius - 05-23-2005

What ticks me off is the fact that these guys are obviously able to make pretty accurate resin reproductions. There are some very impressive "opld leather" or bronze effects and stuff like that. The medieval armour seems ok to me and yet, they chose to do the wrong things as far as romans go. The explanations eludes me. I mean it would have been as easy to make a correct replica of a legionary helmet as it was to make these phony pieces seen in Gladiator". The same goes for the segmentata..

Re: The guilty party... - Tarbicus - 05-23-2005

When you're on set (which I have been a number of times) getting such a large number of extras kitted out is all about logisitics. The earlier you need them the more you have to pay them. They would have done a lot of dressing themselves also. Can you imagine them getting into a seg all by themselves? I have enough trouble myself Big Grin Multiply that by a few hundred or so and it'd be time for lunch (mandatory on set) before they got to shoot anything. Don't get me wrong, I hate the Galdiator segs, but it really is all about logistics when they're trying to get 'x' amount shot in a single day. The segs in the film look like they could be dropped over the shoulders and away you go. No need to shuffle it on, tie them up the front, or have them custom made to fit.

The helmets are major pants, and I completely agree there, although the manufacturing process may have had something to do with it. It's the browguard I think is the real problem for mass production. No excuse for the neckguard though. Maybe they were originally English Civil War helmets from another production and slightly modified so they look a tad Roman-ish.

Cheers.

I have a suspicion the helmets were *loosely* based on the Niederbieber from Heddernheim:

Still way out, but *sorta* makes sense with the neckguard and period:

Cheers.

Re: The guilty party... - Carus Andiae - 06-01-2005

You could be right. If they were modified ECW pattern-helmets, as you suggest (and I've heard that before somewhere) then they were rubbish in their original version as well.

Re: The guilty party... - Tarbicus - 06-02-2005

It binds and whips it out?

'Romanes Eunt Domus'? 'People called Romanes they go the house'?

Re: The guilty party... - Marcus F. - 06-02-2005

"sie" means 'them' here, not 'it'. 8)
