the Psychology of \'red\' - richsc - 05-19-2005

The journal Nature has a UK study on the color red and winning sports teams. Seems folks in red tend to win. Would really seem to me to argue for the most visible things, a red shield, than anything else, but worth perusing.

Richard,

You didn't think of influencing the fight between the red or white tunica warriors, didn't You ?

Well, red is the color of blood, and this could be readyly directed to war, isn't it?

Red - Carus Andiae - 05-22-2005

From the article:

Quote:In human societies, red's aggressive, winning quality may explain why many military uniforms and medals feature the colour, comments Andrew Walton, a sports psychologist based in Coventry, UK.

Really? And I thought the English (and later British) adopted red because it was the cheapest dye:

From the New Model Army Contracts:

Quote: 14 ffebruary Anno Dni 1645 [1646]
These presents doe declare that Richard Downs Citizen of London doth undertake & Contract for and agree to and with ye honorable Comttee of Lords & Comens for Sr Thomas fairfax his Army to provide and deliver unto ye said Comttee or to such as they shall nominate & appoint the number of ye provisions and at ye rates hereafter specified as followeth
(vizt)

Two Thousand Coates and Two Thousand Breeches at seveenteen shillings a Coat & Breeches...
...The coates to be of a Red Colour and of Suffolke, Coventry or Gloucester-shire Cloth and to be made Three quarters & a nayle long faced with bayse or Cotton with tapestrings according to a pattern delivered into ye said Committee...

Although allegedly it does make you look bigger. By the way, 17 shillings is worth about £94 (U.S. $171.77) in today's money. Not bad for 2000 sets of coats and breeches!
