Stephen Mitchell (1948-2024) - D B Campbell - 02-03-2024

I have just learned of the death of Emeritus Professor Stephen Mitchell, who was Professor in Classics and Ancient History at Swansea (1993-2001) and Professor of Hellenistic Culture at Exeter (2002-2011).

RAT members may have read his excellent book A History of the Later Roman Empire, AD 284-641, written in 2006 and revised for a second edition in 2013.

He was particularly known for his research in Turkey. My own favourite paper of his is "Requisitioned Transport in the Roman Empire: A New Inscription from Pisidia", Journal of Roman Studies 76 (1976) pp. 106-131.

Sorry for your loss, I have not been on here much. I am afraid I haven't read his work as yet.
