George Huxley (1932-2022) - D B Campbell - 02-15-2023

I have just noticed the passing of the Greek scholar Professor George L. Huxley, author of Early Sparta (1962), hailed at the time as being "a brilliant book".

Professor of Greek at Queen's University Belfast from 1962 until 1983, he became Honorary Professor of Greek at Trinity College Dublin in 1989, and finally became an Irish citizen at the age of 86. He had a close association with the British School in Athens throughout his career.

Though my message is late, I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Professor Huxley. It is always inspiring to read about his extensive contributions to the field of Greek history and his numerous publications on topics ranging from Greek epic poetry to the early history of Argos. It is clear that Huxley was a respected and accomplished scholar, and his loss will be felt by the academic community
