Small Roman Unguent/Perfume Glass Bottles - Arturius Britannicus - 06-20-2003

Salvete--

I have been intrigued by these small bottles, some very complex little works of art--that never seem to be more than 115mm tall. A bunch of them have shown up on EBay, and continue to do so. Does anybody know of some glass blowers who make repros of these, or who might do so for an economical price. I sure could never afford to use the real thing in a re-enactment!!! I understand they were even used by men, and often to carry oils for rubbing onto the body to the baths.
Take a look also at the RomanGlassMakers
www.romanglassmakers.co.uk/
for superb reproductions. We have a number of their glass, and it's all beautiful. If you ask them and provide examples, they might turn out a line of unguent jars.

I have gone ahead and contacted the two makers of Roman bottles suggested. No answer from the people in Belgium, but got an answer from the Roman glassmakers in the UK. They could make copies of the four bottles at $20-$25 a shot. There would also be a $10-15 charge for shipping three or four bottles. You can see them at

Or email me if this link does not work, and I will send you the pictures. I plan to get one of each. Those who might want ones also might also want to contact the Roman glassmakers through the link provided by Richard Campbell, and make arrangements with them.
I'd like to get several of these too. Thanks for tracking it down and arranging it.

I have copied the information over to the Forum Traiani section for followups, and inviting them to post more information.

Edited by: Richsc at: 7/2/03 6:34 am

Re: Small Roman Unguent/Perfume Glass Bottles - Arturius Britannicus - 07-30-2003

Well now, I've corresponded with both glassblowing outfits, and I have bought four bottles from the UK Roman Glassblowers.

Their URL is in one of Richard's posts. Take a look at the URL I posted before, and it now shows the original Roman glass, and the copies the the UK glassmakers made. As you can see, they have made some extras. I made my choices, so each catagory is minus one piece.

The glass in a catalogue sent me from Belgium had only one type of small unguenta, of a type I am not interested in, although their general catalogue is beautiful!!

Re: Small Roman Unguent/Perfume Glass Bottles - richsc - 07-30-2003

when you say they have extras, you mean that they sell from their site? Or email directly referencing you?

Rich--

Suggest you email them referencing me and the little bottles. They can then send the four scans to you, and advise you which of the numbered bottles I took, and which are available..
