Cohors Cananefatum - Marc - 11-21-2018

Salve Everyone!

After 18 months of hard work, way to much money spend and a few angry girlfriends we can finally say it is starting to look like someting.
We are trying to recreate a late 1st century AD auxilia unit from the lands between the Rhine and Meuse river, modern day Holland. Tacitus described them as the Cananefates.

''Although less in numbers, they are just as brave and skilled as the Batavians''.

All of our members are also from the region where this tribe originated from. I will post a few pictures, please let me know what you guys think! Any suggestions or critics are more then welcomeSmile.

You can follow our instagram account if you want, we are called Germania_Inferior.

Cheers!

Looking good.

Except.. I see one cruciform fubula that is not only too late for you (4th c. AD), but also worn the wrong way (upside down). Smile
Keep up the good work (but also keep those girlfriends happy)!

Excellent work I like the use of the Gallic helmets and mix of swords. I think a more true portrait of Auxillary soldiers in the northern part of the empire  Smile

Looking good. Well done.

Just one slightly niggley point from me. I notice you are all wearing your belts over your sword baldrics. This is a modern 're-enactorism' and actually finds no support in contemporary depictions, which generally show baldrics which are sufficiently short not to be able to be passed under belts, or when shown longer either pass over the belt or are worn without belts.

It may seem unstable at first for the baldric not to be held in place by a belt, but you will very quickly get used to it. I stopped passing my belt over my baldric about twelve years ago, shortening the baldric at the same time, and have never experienced problems with it.

Thank you all for your replies. We got rid of the wrong fibula’s and we will start wearing our belts a different way. Interesting way of looking at it!
