RE: greek round shields? - Dan Howard - 02-08-2018 There were definitely round shields in the Bronze Age; some of them "full-height". But, as Todd said, the Schliemann one isn't a shield, it was a tray or basin of some kind. A similar tray was found with the Dendra Panoply. My book has a chapter on Bronze Age shields and an appendix specifically discussing the shields in the Iliad. IMO Homeric shields were circular, including the large one carried by Hektor. https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Bronze-Age-Military-Equipment/p/3272 RE: greek round shields? - DR_Reham - 02-09-2018 (02-08-2018, 03:53 PM)Feinman Wrote: Hello Reham, thanks for reply . but what about a round shape in Phaistos disk, and round shape from Khania Crete dated around LM IB http://www.salimbeti.com/micenei/images/roundshield47.jpg and also the wooden object from Mycenae? There are no surviving shields from the period you are interested in. All we have are the bronze bosses. The rest is speculation based on some ambiguous illustrations. |
