Reconstructions of the Hydraulis - Clavdivs - 01-09-2018
I came across these videos to-day. Both show reconstructions of the hydraulis or water-organ (a manual or true instrument, not to be confused with the water-organ of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries C.E., which were akin in principle to pianolas). I know very little about the mechanics of this instrument, save that it is attributed (without a reference, but by the Britannica) to Ctesibius of Alexandria in the third century C.E. I found these reconstructions both beautiful and fascinating -- if I may be allowed a little unhistorical rambling, they conjure up images of a quiet warm afternoon reading in the Gardens of Sallust, or in one of the private gardens of Pompeii.
The music is I suspect conjectural, but quite beautiful.
