1. THose yappy things dont count as dogs.
2. Aforementioned yappy dog = FOOD
3. The dogs the romans had are probably interbred with others now.

4. On another note I have a wheaten terrier, not a bright dog but loyal and good for hunting.

Dogs Underfoot - Primitivus - 04-01-2006

Speaking of small dogs, I just came across a website which said in reference to words cave canem, "I am reliably informed, was not to warn people to avoid being bitten originally but so they would avoid stepping on the creature as they mainly had small dogs for pets."

I don't think so...

Deserted Dogs - Primitivus - 04-06-2006

I despise people who abuse and/or desert animals. Sixteen years ago when we wanted to purchase a border collie in the U.K., we could not find a breeder who would work with us, because we were "in the forces." Apparently, those in the military have a poor reputation in terms of continuing to care for their pets when they are reassigned. While I have never met a single military pet owner who was anything other than devoted to the animals in their "family," I do understand how some immoral people would not think twice about discarding a pet when it becomes inconvenient or expensive to care for them... So sad.

Re: Ancient Roman Dog Breeds - flavia - 08-05-2006

I have owned a dalmation a doberman and a jack russel at the same time and the jack russel by far was the boss. He could turn the doberman inside out by biting at his feet causing the dob a lot of distress. By far the jack was the more vicous and once put a man off my veranda by jumping at his """. So please don't put down small dogs such as the jack as they can be quite hard to handle when on the attack especially when you have more than one coming at you. They work as a team... My daughter and her husband have a wonderful Jack Russell. Very intelligent and affectionate dog. I don't think the comment above was intended to be offensive; simply a joke. Working as a team can exponentially increase the power of a team... or an army! Wink

I remember the cast of the dog from Pompeii, who was a thin, border collie sized dog.
