Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Marcus Mummius - 07-11-2007 Quote:Look at this : You mean the drawing? This drawing has been posted on RAT several times in the past... Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Tarbicus - 07-11-2007 Quote:Look at this :Isn't he Augustan (Alexander, that is)? Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Quintus Julius Furius - 07-11-2007 Its a legionary of the punics wars (cf Polybe), 2 ième guerre punique ... Yes, this drawing is very beautiful for the french too !!!!! Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Crispvs - 07-11-2007 Looking very good! You need to make a subarmalus to go under the mail though, otherwise any blow would be likely to break some of your bones if you got into hand to hand combat, although the mail would protect you from cuts and slashes. Crispvs Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Tarbicus - 07-11-2007 Quote:Its a legionary of the punics wars (cf Polybe), 2 ième guerre punique ...I actually meant Alexander, not the drawing. Anyway, Alexander, you look great and would outshine most at Kalkriese Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - M. CVRIVS ALEXANDER - 07-11-2007 Thanks everyone for the compliments. I am not sure about Kalkriese - I am wearing a Pompeii sword. I am telling everyone vaguely that I am aiming at mid-first century. I guess I must have inherited my Gallic A helmet from an older legionary then  Crispvs - if you were talking about my impression - I am wearing a subarmalis with padding on the chest and shoulders (a Roman soldier would not need padding on the back, would he?). Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Crispvs - 07-11-2007 Alexander, Don't worry - I wasn't talking about your impression. I guessed from the shape of the shoulders that you were wearing padding underneath. I was talking about the Polybian legionary in the link Quintus Julius Furius posted. I had the impression it was his own. Crispvs P.S. - I think Tarbicus could be talking about the gathering of many Roman re-enactment groups at Kalkriese in 2003, 2005 and hopefully 2009. Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Tarbicus - 07-11-2007 Quote:I am wearing a subarmalis with padding on the chest and shoulders (a Roman soldier would not need padding on the back, would he?).Ah now, there's a discussion to be had. Connolly was of the firm belief that the helmet neckguards got larger as a defence against hits to the upper back if you fight in a crouching stance, ergo.... Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Crispvs - 07-11-2007 I have to say that although Connolly's article was well argued, I do not agree with the crouching stance he advocated. On several occasions in the past I have had little trouble in causing an opponant in such a position to become unbalanced and trip or fall over. This could be done easily with as little as a sharp kick to the man's shield or an equally sharp tap to his shield with my own shield. Crispvs Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - M. CVRIVS ALEXANDER - 07-11-2007 Ah, I see. Well, I guess it might also be the reason why the hamata doubler covers the upper back. Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Gaius Julius Caesar - 07-11-2007 Quote:Look at this : Where? Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Et tu brute - 07-11-2007 Scroll down to just after half way, the pictures are there. Did they only have one leg? Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Gaius Julius Caesar - 07-11-2007 OK now I see them, they weren't visible earlier for some reason. Nice helmet, but possibly need some doubling on the hamata, and a subarmalis! That must be the famous Deepeeka greave he is wearing? Some of the pictures are great, have seen some before! Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Marcus Mummius - 07-12-2007 Here are some pictures of one of my flavian legionary impressions. What do you think? |
