Who says that? If anything, I'd say there was more need for them compared to the longer hamata.

It has been said many times, but would probably be another wild goose chase to find the post! Like my relief with the mainz gladius! :?
I agree with you Tarbicus, and would think it was good protection too! 8)

Well, if you have a copy of B&C's RME2, both Mike Bishop and Jon Coulston specified pteryges on the segmentata clad Dacian legionary I made for them to their specs.

Quote:OK I was just wondering with the peturges, as some people say that they are not used with segmentata! Mine opens at the front like you other one, but need to find proper fasteners, a sat the moment i am cheating and using kilt buckles!

I was thinking along those lines for a centurion hamata sub, but then I have seen pictures in osprey, I think, of peturges on a subarmalis for a seg so....
looks good to me!

Heres a closeup on the fastenings on my other sub. Two holes per leatherstrap pair and then just make a knot as on the picture

Jim

I thought that was you in the picture Jim? No, I don't have copies of either source, so have tried to go by what I read in the websites/books i have access to, and modeled mine on one I saw on a re-enactment site. it being a very small pic from the back, it is undoubtedly different, but is very comfortable under armour! So peturges could be added for lorica in the temporary fashion you mentioned in another post then? I have just picked up along the way from some source or the other that peturges were not used with segs. :? Even though I am sure they are depicted in Osprey several times........

Martin
I originally had fabric fasteners but they were too flimsy, as I didn't know of a local source of leather, and was totally green/new to re-enacting, so improvised with the buckles. Hopefully, when I find a decent source of leather, will either try to copy yours, or try to make roman type buckles! :? [/u][/i]

Re: Show here your roman soldier impression - Crispvs - 12-13-2006

Byron,

I see no problem with pteruges and a lorica segmentata. On stelae depicting soldiers in mail, some have pteruges and some do not. Very few sculptures show segmentata so I see no reason why the subarmali used with them should not show the same variety of pteruges / no pteruges.

You are in full right to interupt it because I think tis is not the treead for the subarmalis discussion... hey guys we can take the discussion about the subarmalis in one of the old treads on it!

And a verry nice tunic Martin!
