Samnite - Anonymous - 06-16-2004

I made the cuirass by hammering out the triple disc indents into a square of 16guage brass sheet. I then cut out the shape using a "metal" blade on my jig saw. The shoulder plates are hinged but again making the hinges was fairly simple. The most tedious bit was drilling the holes all around the edges of the various plates to stitch the leather backing on. At the time I didn't have a leather makers awl so I had to hammer each hole with a nail to punch through the leather - it was then that my thumbs really suffered. The helmet is also a Depeeka which I modified by removing the crest nob and replacing it with the transverse bar that held the three feather tubes. From discussion with Peter Connolly I know that I need to redo this to make it thicker which will probably entail having one cast. For me I found the helmet way to big and was forced to put in a lot of padding to stop it from falling over my face. This I believe is a feature of a number of their helmets where the bowl hight particular is well over sized. 
The tunic is based on the designs on the Luciana Paestum. They have very ornate borders on them which i couldn't have found a woven sool for so I stitched strips of red and white wool onto the basic blue. Anyone familiar with the Samniteappearance in both fresco and stuary evidence will know that their tunics were so short they would nowadys get one arrested, so I allowed a little extra length. 
The same design and manufacture was used for the flag which appears to be a feature of Samnite warriors. Mine looks similar to the Norwegian national flag so I took some stick from the group over that. I read a few years back a debate that suggested that the flag may simply have been a spare tunic being carried as a standard but mine is a straight forward banner. 
I have attached a link to another photo from the show (Kirby Hall 2002) where we (LegioXIIIIGMV) were doing a multi period display taking the public from the early hoplite appearance through to the end of the Western Empire.

I've read somewhere that the flag/standard was not just a spare tunic, but the tunic of a defeated enemy, as in the fresco you got your design from, there is a belt hanging just behind the tunic. 
 
My helmet is also big, and, like you say, it takes a lot of padding, which I've yet to get perfectly fit. Have you gotten it to sit comfortably without worrying about it fall off, or have you put a strap ring in the back? 
 
I know two of the helmets on display at Paestum have quite a bit more substantial feather-tubes; I can post a couple of pictures when I get home (or, if you can't wait, you can see a bunch of stuff from Paestum at

Great set of images....I was surprised to see an almost full panoply from the Etrusco-Roman(?) period. I also saw the frescoes. Would they be somewhat of an accurate representation of the military for that period?

I've seen several where people wear trousers or bracae with the cuirass and pteryges. Was that an established military garment in colder climates in the 4th/5th century AD? <img src="http://otherworldfantasies.com/gabriele2/eilean_small.jpeg"/>

In fact, trousers were the standard issue for the Roman military from Third century on. In hotter climates, soldier went bare-legged, with the lower part of the lkegs protected by puttees...
