Nicomedia - Nathan Ross - 03-14-2016 Does anyone know of any studies of Roman Nicomedia? There seems to be almost nothing available online, not even a plan of the city. Seems strange, for such an important place... Any suggestions much appreciated! RE: Nicomedia - Michael Kerr - 03-14-2016 Would this thesis be of help to you? https://ore.exeter.ac.uk/repository/bitstream/handle/10036/3713/GuneyH_TPC.pdf?sequence=3 Regards

It might have been helpful, although it's entirely about the local economic infrastructure rather than the city itself, but all the plans and maps have been removed 'for copyright purposes'... RE: Nicomedia - Lord Hobbers - 03-22-2016 I found this when I was looking for reference material of that city recently: http://www.limenproject.net/izmit/ There is a drawn 'reconstruction' of part of the city, but I can't say houw accurate it is.: http://www.limenproject.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/03FigureNicomediaCityHarborReconstruction.jpg Like you, I found there to be a lack of pictorial information on the city, which I found surprising. Yes, I'd seen those too, and found them similarly vague! No idea how the pretty-looking reconstruction drawing might equate to any actual remains of the city or known archaeology... I know there's some sort of palace superstructure ruin remaining in modern Izmit, probably Tetrarchic, and presumably some other traces as well, but there seems to be absolutely nothing published about them, at least in English. RE: Nicomedia - Flavius Inismeus - 12-23-2021 There's an open access book chapter from 2020 on religious affairs in Roman Nicomedia: https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctv19cwdm9.8 ; but very little there on city topography and related matters. Interesting stuff, although, as you say, the city itself remains a bit of a blank on the map. RE: Nicomedia - Lothia - 12-27-2021 Nathan, During my research I found this image on line. I don't know how accurate t is and I don't think it includes all of the city. https://i.imgur.com/1uXRSJl.jpg RE: Nicomedia - Nathan Ross - 12-27-2021 (12-27-2021, 06:19 PM)Lothia Wrote: https://i.imgur.com/1uXRSJl.jpg Thanks! That's one of the images from the site I linked in the first post - I think it's the 'citadel' at the top of the hill, which later became the city itself after the lower city on the coast was abandoned (presumably?). RE: Nicomedia - Lothia - 01-02-2022 Nathan, Just saw this from Acadamia. Would it help? There are a few interestesing photos at the end, but otherwise it seems to be mostly images pulled from the net. Again, nothing on the city plan - but I have long ago put that one down as unknown! Thanks anyway though. |
