LIDAR patterns - richsc - 02-15-2016
You may have read the news about LIDAR finding unknown Roman roads. Presumably their pattern shows up pretty well. Has anyone heard of studies that group LIDAR images into patterns? Forts look pretty much like forts, but if there were a battlefield, would it have characteristics that could be indentified? Burial pits, debris fields, etc.?

How would You recognize debris fields in LIDAR image? The point of LIDAR imaging is that it is useful by recording features which are visually different in shape from its surrounding. Usually it happens in flat terrain with huge human created structures.

seems too fine grained and random for the stuff we're using a Church Stowe. Roads, trenches, hedge lines, ridge and furrow, landslides are all visible but I think burial pits and debris fields would have sufficient a signature on there own. LIDAR seems to me like aerial photography on steroids. Maybe it'll get better as higher resolution stuff get released.

It would be interesting to see an updated survey of Alesia - a battlefield whose extensive fortifications would reveal themselves.

It would be interesting especially to confirm whether the battle site of Alesia was at Alise-Sainte-Reine or at Chaux de Crotenay as Andre Berthier contends.....

Tony Clunn identified what he called the Kalkriese battlefield by the debris field of the Romans. It may be that debris fields all have a similar signature.

Do you have access to any LIDAR of Kalkreise? Clunn found the debris field, beginning with coins, with a metal detector. But having a look over the site with Lidar might give some signtures of known features.
