Battle of Strasbourg/Argentoratum - inkstain - 09-30-2014 is there a previous thread that doesn't come up? I searched 'Strasbourg.' Specifically, can anyone set a better date than Adrian Murdoch's 'late August?' Why not early September? Thanks Battle of Strasbourg/Argentoratum - Flavivs Aetivs - 09-30-2014 Did you change the search timeframe? It defaults to "1 year and newer." Battle of Strasbourg/Argentoratum - ValentinianVictrix - 10-01-2014 Unfortunately Julian's own account of the battle is sadly lost to us. The most useful accounts are those by Ammianus, Libanius and Zosimus. None of these give a specific date but do say the battle took place during the time wheat was harvested, so that would be between July and September depending on the weather during the spring and summer months. Battle of Strasbourg/Argentoratum - Robert Vermaat - 10-01-2014 There's this thread: http://www.romanarmytalk.com/17-roman-military-history-a-archaeology/17639-use-of-the-pilum.html?start=15 The batlle comes up now and then, but it threads not directly about the battle but discussing, cavalry, Ammianus, Julian, troop numbers etc. Battle of Strasbourg/Argentoratum - ValentinianVictrix - 10-01-2014 (I must say you look rather dapper in that profile photo of yours Robert! :-) ) |
