Recommendations For 180AD-285AD Reference Books? - Methos - 06-29-2014

Salve all! It's been some time since I've posted or perused the forums here at RAT. Yet, I just got through talking to a dear friend who's gotten to delving into Roman history. He's wondering if anyone might recommend any historical texts covering from 180AD through 285AD?

Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I'd rate this one very highly:

The Roman Empire at Bay

It's heavyweight stuff though!

Hi Javier,

Pat Southern's book "The Roman Empire from Severus to Constantine" is also worth a look - much less massive than the Routledge volume, but her focus tends to be political and military, and I think she writes nice, flowing prose:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roman-Empire-Severus-Constantine/dp/0415239443/ref=sr_1_16?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1404035962&sr=1-16

Harder to obtain, narrower in chronological scope, more expensive (and quite old these days) but a book I enjoyed a lot many years ago is Brauer's "Age of the Solider Emperors":

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Age-Soldier-Emperors-D-224-84-Classical/dp/0815550367/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1404036243&sr=1-1&keywords=age+of+the+soldier+emperors

Regards, John
