question about pugio scabbard - LUCIUS ALFENUS AVITIANUS - 05-16-2014

Yes, it's a local variant of pugio of Hispania. The scabbard is made in thin bronze plate with simple lineal decoration, and iron side guttering. I think it's begining of first century. Museum could be Coninmbriga (Portugal) ???

I also have a question about the Pugio itself...

It appears that it was a thin straight tang... different from the one to the far right. What type of hilt would this one have had?

question about pugio scabbard - PhilusEstilius - 05-17-2014

Patrick.
Where we can see the hand guard of the one with the long tang this dagger may have had a complete wood handle the one to the right may have had a shorter two thirds length tang, where a central rivet might have gone through combined with two rivets in the ends of the hand guard holding it all together.
