Here is a VERY detailed picture of the Berkasovo helmet: 8+)

The iron core under the gilded sheathing seems to have been quite thick originally.

I have detailed images of lots of these helmets I've found online, including the Concesti and River Maas.

I want Comitatus' Concesti Helmet... that thing is awesome.

The lettering on the side seems to be

'Omega Z Z Omega N Y M E N Omega N Theta O P I

I have too. Unfortunately the more detailed Concesti pics are black and white.

Yeah, the original helmet was Silver with brass or gold trim, not sure. It belonged to a Hunnic Burial and dates to something like 400-425, making it the last known ridge helmet in the archaeological record, along with the River Maas hlmet (which desperately needs a new reconstruction)

It is interesting to note that they seem to disappear around 420-ish, even though we have large numbers of them dating in the period between 375 and 410 (like Carnuntum and Intercisa)

Yes, I have always wondered about this sudden disappearance of the ridge helmets too. I think the Concesti helmet probably had a gilded silver sheathing, which has faded away from the most exposed places so it looks like it had a gilded edging only in some places. Wink

the silver sheathing is still there:

Thanks Evan. I found this site a couple of weeks ago too. Some detailed pictures I have never seen before (meaning familiar helmets from different angles etc.). 8+)
