To be fair to the Italians...well obviously there's a lot of corruption, bribery and nepotism involved in antiquities. More importantly some of the prices are absolutely disgusting and a few people need to be killed rather messily. I mean really, the Capitoline museum is a perfect example of possibly wonderful but insanely mismanaged museum..
However, as I said, to be fair to the Italians they have a lot of antiquities. It really is insane when you think about it and no I'm not just talking about Rome. I think there's more famous material culture remains in Italy than anywhere else in Europe and when one realises this one sees that all in all they're doing an admirable job.
That and many local museums are reasonably well managed and in terms of hospitality and working with collections...well very few people are as friendly as the Italians on this level.
Shame about the museum, however. I can at least say its not ALL doom and gloom.

Just a clarification: the museo della civiltà romana is not closed: some rooms are interdicted to visitors, but it should be only a temporary situation...
