Books or references for Legionary marching camps - Probatus - 09-27-2013
Sorry is this is a redundant topic but I didn't see a particular thread on this...
I am interested in finding books on Legionary marching camps, in particular with details on how they were constructed. I would like to try to replicate it myself so looking for something with some good detail or illustrations on what it would take.

Don't buy it from Amazon, as the Museum of Wales sells it for far less.

"Roman Camps in Britain", also by Rebecca Jones has plenty of illustrations and amongst the colour plates has images of reconstructed ditches, "caltrop" defences and tent (the last looks to be fabric rather than leather), as well as various aerial shots:

To be honest, though, you are probably best with the Tempus volume as it is about £12 in paberback from Amazon and has a lot of images and probably more than enough detail.
Don't forget the siege camps at Numantia which might be of interest, e.g.

Similarly, the camps at Masada are siege camps, in a rather different environment to Britain. I think there are a few images in Yadin's book (I on longer have a copy) but I am sure a bit of image-googling will give you some decent pictures:

Gilliver, C.M., 1993. The Roman Art of War: Theory and Practice. PhD. University of London.
Leslie, A.F., 1995. Roman Temporary Camps in Britain (PhD thesis). PhD. University of Glasgow.
I think they can both be downloaded for free here (you must register).
With regard to primary sources, see especially Pseudo-Hyginus (De munitionibus castrorum), Polybius and Vegetius.
