Type A Pugio Scabbards - Doc - 07-15-2013

Ave,

How were Type A sheaths put together? Were the edges of the top plate wrapped over the back plate OR was the back plate put over the wrapped edges? Attached file (Scabbard1).

From some of the pictures that I have seen, I do not see either of these methods. It appears as if the front plate was put over the wood core and the back plate is then put into the back of the wood core but inside and in between the sides of the front plate. I mention this because from the side view, the edge of the front plate at the bottom of the scabbard is clean and straight. It does not appear rounded at all. The only way this can happen is if the edge is not rolled or wrapped over. It remains as is and the other plates is placed within. Then the whole things I held together by rivets from the suspension loops. Attached file (Scabbard2)

Cheers
