Salvete omnes,

Since Deepeeka refuse (or is unable) to produce oval shaped helmets and for my budget a "handmade" helmet is to expensive I choose another way :

I bought a cheap "trooper"-helmet for 30 euro (and kept only the oval bowl... i fact that is the only piece of the helmet that is usable, the sizes are front-back : 25cm and left-right 19cm... absolute perfect for a 60cm circum-head like mine Smile
I bought a "second-hand" Gallic-G helmet for 80 euro and stripped it completely (see pictures)
I did a search for a professional welder (TIG-specialist) who can weld thin metal plates, and he had a look on the helmet, and next week he will make some time for me to "reconstruct" the helmet... He will do the job for 50 euro
Still I have the end the details myself (like egalisation of the weldinglines, polishing the metal and the fitting of the copper ridges, etc...
So this helmet will cost me 160 euro... I hope it will work out fine... Prey to IOVIS for me Smile

So, you can see the pictures of the stripped down pieces, and next week (I hope), I'll post the finished helmet...

I like it, we can all see now, how hard it is to make something wearable from the trooper helmet.

I wonder, when you say that Deepeeka "refuses" to make oval helmets- and in the same statement you also say that you used a oval shell from Deepeeka's trooper helmet of size 25cm x 19cm. Am I missing something here. At this stage, all our Roman helmets come with a oval shell. So, please do clarify on this point.

Thanks

Gagan

Sorry, when I said "trooper-helmet"...it is probably not a Deepeeka-one... because I choose this one because it has a really oval-shaped shell (it is not spun-driven). I don't know from which manufacturer this one is. By using the expresion "trooper-helmet" I meant the "wrong"-historical creating (curved neck guard, wrong cheek pieces, etc...)

look at the picture from "topview" : nice ovalshaped, isn't it ?

Gagan, you say : "At this stage, all our Roman helmets come with a oval shell"...

Sorry Gagan, I did not knew that Deepeeka produced oval shaped helmets ? I did miss something over here ? Here in Europe every Deepeeka-helmet that you buy from a dealer, still comes in the "old bowl" form... is that because all the dealers warehouses are still full of "old helmets" ? Could you show me pictures from your "new" oval helmets, please ? And which dealer will ship me a "new-styled helmet" ?

Hi
In future, when you buy a Deepeeka helmet, I suggest you talk to one of our distributors like Battle Merchants or Armae. They will be glad to help you out.

Regards

Hello Gagan,

I contacted battlemerchant... but I did not receive any confirmation from their side about "new oval shaped" roman helmets from Deepeeka... perhaps you can help me about the size of your new helmets... it can not be that difficult for you ? only go into your ware house and measure it up ?

I think what Gagan is trying to say that the helmets are slightly oval if you measure them, but not by much I must say. In the case of my Gallic G and H I believe they are some 8" x 8.6"

Honestly though Franciscus, it would have been much simpler to remove the browguard and squish the helmet into a more oval shape than to hack it all up. Too little too late now I suppose

Thanks for joining the forum, Franciscus. We have a forum rule that requires your "real" first name in your signature. Would you please see to that right away? Thanks in advance.

Hello Mat,

Even with "squishing" the helmet, it wouldn't have fitted on my head ... I know... I tried it first and it didn't work. Oh, yes I know that those helmets have a small oval shape... no big deal

answer for Demetrius : OK, I'll arrange that.. mihi in mentem non venerat... sorry-(me paenitet)

RE: customizing trooper helmet - franciscus - 06-11-2021

Hello everybody... a long time ago since I was here.  In 2013 I started a conversion of a Deepeeka helmet with a larger, oval helmet shell... I never finished it and than there was COVID... During the quarantaine I was teleworking and during the breaks I found the helmet in my garage.  So I decided to get the job done !  Since 2013 I I did evening school in welding and after 3 years I manage pretty fine in stick-MIG-MAG and TIG welding...  See the results...

First I made a new eyebrow ; in real steel, no ironcast

The helmet is higher and longer (front-neck distance = 24cm) and oval shaped.

I welded the deepeeka wings on the troopers helmet shell

I'll keep you informed about the progress !
