New Article on the Strategikon of Maurice - Sean Manning - 08-28-2013

Philip Rance has posted a new article on Academia.edu with some comments on a Byzantine military treatise related to the Strategikon and dating to the 630s or 640s. He has a new edition of the long Latin order to soldiers entering battle with translation (“Silentium. Nemo demittat, nemo antecedat bandum.” and so on) which uses this other text as an extra source. Anyone who uses Maurice as a source for Latin orders might want to have a look!

Great find!

New Article on the Strategikon of Maurice - Robert Vermaat - 08-29-2013

Philip Rance is one of the best academics where it comes to the study of sources from the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods. He's also a great guy and very approachable.

Personally I'm still awaiting this titel to be published at last:

The Roman Art of War in Late Antiquity: The Strategikon of the Emperor Maurice. A Translation with Commentary and Textual Studies ([Birmingham Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Monographs] Ashgate; forthcoming). Vol. 1: Translation and Commentary; Vol. 2: Manuscripts and Textual Studies.

One can hope. ;-)
